Oromo Relief Association (ORA) -Waldaa Gargaasa Oromoo was first founded in 1979 in response to mass displacement in the horn and a nation reeling from drought, famine, & political violence.
Their early projects organized mobile clinics and provided care for displaced people along Ethiopia’s borders (mostly Somalia, Djibouti & Sudan).
On top of the literacy campaigns, ORA also operated general public education campaigns among displaced people and refugees in the Horn of Africa.
When the new government came to power in the early 1990s, ORA was declared an OLF affiliate & kicked out of Ethiopia. Though they continued to work from abroad, they were only able to re-register in 2019–40 years from the time they were founded.
